Chief of Police
Ranson, WV seeks experienced applicants for the position of Police Chief. This exempt position reports directly to the Mayor and is responsible to the City Manager for administrative functions of the Police Department, as outlined in the Ranson Municipal Code. The position performs a variety of professional, administrative, technical, and supervisory duties related to the management and operation of the Ranson Police Department. This includes providing leadership, supervision, and technical guidance to departmental staff in the performance of tasks that ensure the safety, security, and quality of life for the residents and visitors of Ranson.

Compensation: $95,049.67+ depending upon experience and qualifications (Pay Range Grade 27).

The position performs a variety of professional, administrative, technical, and supervisory duties related to the management and operation of the Ranson Police Department. This includes providing leadership, supervision, and technical guidance to departmental staff in the performance of tasks that ensure the safety, security, and quality of life for the residents and visitors of Ranson.
The employee must possess a thorough knowledge of law enforcement principles, practices, and procedures, as well as applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Familiarity with relevant Ranson ordinances and departmental policies will be required but can be acquired on the job. The ability to develop and implement strategic and tactical policies aligned with the City’s vision is crucial to this role, along with the ability to effectively oversee daily departmental operations and address interrelated issues with attention to detail. Critical to this position is the ability to communicate effectively with diverse individuals at all levels of the organization and the community.
The position demands flexibility, proactivity, resourcefulness, and a high level of professionalism and maturity. Expert written and verbal communication skills, strong decision-making abilities (with supervisory guidance as needed), exceptional organizational skills, and attention to detail are essential. This salary-exempt position requires the flexibility to work outside of standard business hours to meet the needs of the Department and the City.
The successful candidate must ensure that staff performance aligns with departmental goals, strategic objectives are pursued, and operational details are executed without oversight gaps.
Qualifications: Candidates should possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in criminal justice, police science, public or business administration, or a related fi eld. Alternatively, individuals with significant relevant experience and demonstrated training in law enforcement, leadership, and management may qualify in lieu of a formal degree.
Candidates must have a minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible supervisory or administrative law enforcement experience. Current certification as a West Virginia law enforcement officer is preferred. Certification from the FBI National Academy is highly desirable and may be required for candidates without equivalent advanced leadership training. Strong consideration will be given to candidates with demonstrated leadership experience within West Virginia’s criminal justice system. Candidate must meet all Department physical standards, maintain a valid driver’s license, and obtain or maintain all police officer and police chief certifications required by West Virginia law.
